Alone: How Not To Feel Lonely When You Are Alone

Alone…

 Woman alone

Alone time, “me” time whichever you choose to call it. Sometimes we find ourselves alone but we want to try hard to make sure it doesn’t lead to loneliness because loneliness is a hard place to be.

Being alone and loneliness are two different things and actually, being alone is not a bad thing in itself. It only becomes bad when it’s taken to the extreme. You could be alone for a short period of time or temporarily. Being alone has to do with not having people around you. But the opposite is the case with loneliness, you could be with people and still actually feel lonely.

If you are alone or feeling lonely, these are some tidbits to help you get by:

1. Enjoy your own company when alone

You need to first enjoy who you are. If you don’t enjoy yourself or if you don’t like what you see in the mirror when you wake up everyday, you would not only feel alone, you will feel lonely- even when you have people around you. So if that be the case, how much more do you need to enjoy who you are when you are all by yourself. Being alone could stem from many reasons, a recent break up, a move to a new place or a new job. If you are in any of these positions, enjoy you and you will not feel lonely even though you are alone for now.

2. Entertain yourself

Find things you love and do them. It could be reading a book, cooking, going to the gym, watching your favorite shows, praying or even sleeping. Not that you enjoy sleep so much that it leads you to always procrastinate or become so lazy though. By Entertaining yourself with things you like and enjoy, you keep boredom at bay.

3. Get busy

You can use your alone time to draw up your plans and make good use of your journal. Write down things you would love to achieve. Writing down your goals is however a first step. You should take it even further by running with that vision by beginning to do things that would bring you closer to those goals.

4. Be productive

You could start with something as simple as making your bed or cleaning your room while you play your favorite music. Time goes by fast when you are engrossed in doing something and are also fueled by something boosting your energy towards accomplishing that task at the same time. Having a check list for your daily tasks and checking them off as you attain them is a good motivator to do more. There’s something about visually seeing your goals that motivates you to making sure you get it done.

5. Daydream

Most times we see day dreaming as a negative thing or going to one fantasy land in our minds that we wish could happen to us in real life- and that’s exactly what it is. Day dreaming is actually good for you. It takes you places you wish you are but are not yet in currently or hope to be. It’s like taking a trip to the future. Many believe when you day dream it has to do with things that are impossible to achieve. But who says it can’t happen? Go on a day dream trip and enjoy yourself while you are there. The best part of it? It’s free.

6. Journal

Letting out your thoughts in writing is greatly underestimated by many people and the power behind journaling is something that is not harnessed in its full potential enough. I have done it for many years and I can tell you from my own personal experience that it works. It is not only therapeutic, it is also soothing. When you have a lot on your mind and you just don’t feel like talking to anyone or may be you just want to be alone, journaling can be your companion to help you sort out your thoughts and also navigate the emotions you are feeling. Journaling can certainly help you through the roughest and toughest seasons of your life. Take advantage of this great way to decompress.
